Lawndale’s Environmental Charter School teaches its students the art of green living

In cities of concrete, where everything is time and money, it becomes hard to teach our children about environment and its preservation. But, on entering the premises of Lawndale’s Environmental Charter School, where you are welcomed by two mini amphitheaters built from broken concrete slabs, the first glimpses assure you that this place will give your children the right platform for learning how to become responsible eco conscious citizens.

Teaching the children well at LA's Environmental Charter School

There are around 500 students who share their campus with chickens and rabbits and also greenhouses where they are allowed to grow chard seedlings, etc. A bike repair shop teaches them how to repair bikes and helps the students brush up their skills, letting them know the importance of fuel free riding. 30 percent of the students ride to school using bikes and the coming years might see the number rise.

By growing their own vegetables, the students learn about the importance of locally grown food and even the families of the students can enjoy treating on the fresh and organically grown greens. The greenhouses where this food is produced are powered by solar panel, which makes them free from seasonal impact.

The school also offers an environmentally themed program required by every 10th and 11th grader, besides the mandated curriculum. The program teaches theoretical scientific specifications about various issues and also about how this message can be effectively marketed. The main of all of this is to prepare students as environmental warriors, who carry the eco conscious legacy even outside school.
