Landship expansive house concept endowed with sustainable features from natural elements

LandshipWhenever we think of the Bahamas, the glorious effervescence of the clear sunshine kissing upon the wide stretch of golden-white beaches comes to our mind. And in this paradisiacal setting, the Amonle studio (of architects headed by John Allsopp) has contrived the Landship, a provincial dwelling for an extended family. To be built in the most populous island of Bahamas, New Providence, the home will be endowed with a plethora of modern amenities and low energy, green attributes.

In a bid to make optimum usage of naturalistic components, the architects have sought three most prevalent elements that can be associated with the local climatic environment: light, wind, and rain. Following the essential sun path (significant seasonal-and-hourly positional pattern of the sun), the dwelling will be oriented along the east-west axis. This orientated system minimizes the glare of direct sunlight during sun’s low position, but still optimizes the degree of natural lighting during the day time.

Coming to the wind element, breeze flowing from from north-easterly to southerly is a common feature of the island nation. So the designers have envisaged of a vertical axis wind turbine, which is to be installed on the eastern side for maximum exposure. Vertical axis wind turbines also have the added advantage of being multi-directional, i.e., they are capable of generating wind power from every direction. According to the architects, the capacity of this turbine will be around 7,500 kWh per year.

Finally coming to the natural element of rain, the dwelling will feature a single yet expanding roofing system at the same level. This would allow an efficient collective system for rainwater collection. Again according to the designers, one inch of water level collected on the expansive surface area of the roof would allow the provision of sufficient water supply for six people for a period of one week.

So finally we have a concept house whose design hinges on the common yet efficacious elements, which have the potentiality to contribute to enhanced sustenance.
