Hyundai, Kia electric vehicles to get power from SK Energy’s lithium-ion batteries

Eco Factor: SK Energy’s lithium-ion batteries to power upcoming EVs.

We have already seen many trendy cars making a breakthrough in the world of EVs and can expect electric cars to dominate the transportation industry in the near future. Keeping this fact in mind South Korea-based SK Energy Co. has decided to expand its business by providing lithium-ion batteries for upcoming electric vehicles from both Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors.

These advanced lithium-ion batteries use a unique lithium manganese oxide cathode material; a surface-modified graphite on the anode; a gel polymer electrolyte; and a ceramic-coated separator. The first car to get SK Energy’s lithium-ion batteries will be Hyundai’s i10 EV, which is scheduled for release in 2011. The batteries feature SK cells that a specific energy density of around 140 Wh/kg. These cells provide enough power to give the i10 a top speed of 81 miles per hour and a 99-mile range.
