Hot weather tolerant Agave to act as a source of biofuel feedstock

Prof. E. Garcia-Moya and colleagues, at the Colegio de Postgraduados en Ciencias Agricolas, are out with a new research on a tough and valuable plant named, Agave. Used for the production of beverages, food, and fiber, this plant has the capability to grow in dry and blistering weather environment.

With an added advantage of growing rapidly, neither does it battle with food crops nor will it have an influence of the ever varying universal climate on it. These Mexicans believe after meticulous studies that since, its yields are akin to those of corn, and superior to other desert shrubbery (highly productive biomass crops) it may act as an outstanding biofuel feedstock. Waste produced during tequila and mescal making plus that from the paddock after harvesting can be a great source of biofuel feedstock which may further be used for bioenergy production.
