Foghorn at Huntington lighthouse has a new ray of life: 5-foot-by-42-inch solar panels.

The Foghorn which was unheard for the past three years lost its last hope when the cable bringing electricity from the shore failed and even the temporary arrangements didn’t work effectively.
So the 95 year old concrete structure got solar panels along with six large batteries for foggy days.

Conversationalists are hoping for more up gradations like getting brighter lights that is visible against harsh lights form the shore.

The new additions by the US Coast guard received warm welcome by the people who are just too used to the bellowing of the foghorn; especially the fishermen who don’t have navigation systems on their small boats and rely on the tower for light and warnings during heavy fogs.

But just as the technicians left it started sounding round the clock, bleating every 10seconds at 122.7 decibels, creating noise like a commercial jet taking off.; making it difficult for the people around to catch sleep.

Operating with a optical detector, the foghorns send a beam of light to determine visibility. The system is designed in such a way that instead of shutting down, it stays on until repaired to protect fishermen and boaters.

The foghorn at the historic 42 foot high concrete tower had malfunctioned and emitted noise round the clock for nearly 41 days in 1994.

There were plans to discontinue it but the strong support to save it for aesthetic reasons and navigation purposes has saved it.

With a fully functional historical lighthouse with power of the sun, it won’t shut up (until repaired)!
