Harvesting electricity from Dairy Farm-produced manure to power about 300 to 400 Vermont homes

electricity from cow manure

Electricity from methane is no new a concept. But, how environment-friendly the harvesting can be is all that makes the alternative energy harvesting successful. The Audet family’s Blue Spruce Farm does just that.

The cows at this farm make nearly 9,000 gallons of milk and about 35,000 gallons of manure a day. Inspite of being a curse and burden for the environment they are used as a blessing. The farm is using the manure to harvest electricity. The methane from the manure is used in the production.

The Audets have a power company, Central Vermont Public Service Corp., with the help of which, it have devised a way for extracting the methane from the manure, piping it to a generator.

The electricity produced is enough to power 300 to 400 average Vermont homes. This has inspired four other Vermont farms with similar projects in the planning or early construction stages.
