Eco Factor: Washing machine uses energy generated by exercise bike.

Chinese electronics manufacturer Haier has unveiled a prototype human-powered washing machine at IFA 2010. The system includes an exercise bike with a lithium-ion battery that collects energy as the user pedals. Collected energy is then used to power a front-loading washing machine without drawing any power from the grid.

The creators claim that each 20-minute exercise session is enough to power the machine for one cold cycle wash. The company stated that it is gauging consumer response at the show and might consider bringing the idea to the market.
