When people set up the town of Greensburg, Kansas, way back in 1886, they surely were not thinking about making it a town that is a hub for eco-friendly design, and understandably so. More than a century ago, it was a matter of sustenance to the people of the town and they were ready to do everything possible to just stay alive. But times have changed and with it the town feels that it needs to go eco-friendly. So they decided to make sure that all public structures in the place were LEED-certified buildings.

Greensburg’s Community Arts Center is where this green revolution will start, as this is seen as a perfect place to start spreading the word about benefits that come with going eco-friendly. Studio804’s sustainable prototype encompasses all aspects of passive energy gain through intelligent passive design, utilizing and harnessing the natural fluctuations in temperature and air movement in our buildings caused by the predictable changes in the movements of the sun through the cycle of the seasons.

The proposed new Arts Center will run on wind, geothermal and solar energy and will have facilities such as a green roof and cross ventilation for rooms so as to minimize the consumption of energy. The building will also boast of a rainwater harvesting system that will cater to the water needs of the building. The solar panels on top of the roof will power the building along with the windmills around the Arts Center and the geothermal energy will take care of the heating needs. The new Community Arts Center is aimed at encouraging the whole town of Greensburg to go green, and one hopes it will lead to more such structures across Greensburg.
