The mega-structure:

Recently a pompous ceremony had been held in Brussels, oblivious to the political shenanigans surrounding Belgium. But this grandiose commemoration was befitting of the affluent status of a global organization such as NATO, and it was organized to mark the start of construction of the new NATO Headquarters in Brussels. Estimated to cost around an astronomical figure of $600 million, the new monumental building is slated to cover an area of 245,000sqm. However, it was always on the cards, as it will replace the old building which was actually built on a temporary basis, but is still in service for 41 years!

NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen astutely mentioned, “A modern NATO needs a modern building”. And this grand design conceived by reputed international architects and engineers Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) with Belgium architect, Assar, does imbue the modernistic outlook with its entire propensity. The structure resembling ‘a clasp of fingers’ symbolizing unity, is scheduled to be completed in 2015 and is expected to bring better working and support facilities for delegates of all 28 NATO allies and 50 partner countries.

What makes it mega?

This huge project will be constructed on the expansive 100 acres area of the existing NATO Headquarters. This building will incorporate 2,690,000sqf area of the whole project, connecting a plethora of office spaces, conference rooms and private areas. Each building will be uniquely interlinked with others and will have an average height of 33.5 m, divided among 7 floors.

Sustainability is the dictum, which will be steadfastly followed by every facet of this wondrous structure. Ingenious and progressive green architectural technologies like geothermal boreholes, rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation, thermal mass cooling, passive solar shading, green roofs and solar hot water heating – all will be incorporated. Moreover there will be substantial usage of recyclable materials and elements in this truly magnificent building infused with ‘green’ ideals.
