Eco Factor: Sustainable complex makes maximum use of natural resources.

GPP Architects have unveiled plans for a sustainable educational complex for University College Nordjylland that will be built in Aalborg, Denmark. Christened the UCN IMAGO, the education center will feature four buildings arranged around a common space. All these four buildings will be oriented toward the common space, which will serve as the nucleus of the structure allowing interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge.

The main level of the building contains spaces for public and group functions, while the other three levels include educational facilities, which are grouped in four large families. Out of the four wings of the structure, three will include UCN’s Technology & Business departments and the other one will be used for continuing education. The curving overhangs and balconies in the central space create a green living structure, while acting as sunscreens to shade the sun.

The entire complex has been designed as a high efficiency building, and the focus has been on energy efficient solutions, so that the environmental impact of the architecture can be reduced. The architects’ intent is to use the sun’s rays to their maximum potential to reduce overall energy demand of the structure.
