ATP Architects and engineers have conceived “Innovative Residential and Care Home IWP Liebhartstal II,” for Vienna, which is a 252 bed complex for the elderly. The complex ranging from 12,260 to 25,660 sqm allows the elderly to do all that they like, but within the comforts and security of this complex. In fact, the concept is so fascinating and complete that the ATP Architects and engineers have won an open invitation competition for this concept.

The complex is located between the ever bustling urban Vienna and the slopes of Wilhelminenberg. While the view on one side is a hilly landscape, the other side is that of the suburbs. The interesting Z shape of the complex was determined based on the land use plan conceived at the early stages of this idea. A L-shaped volumetric structure was added which integrates seamlessly with the prior structure. Each room has a panoramic view of the outside. The design of the facades underline the opportunity for the residents to express their individuality to the outside world.

We all perceive our environment using our senses, visual stimulus leading the pack. That touch point has been very well epitomized here by using materials and colors that guides and stimulates the residents in a positive way. The extensive greenery paints a picture perfect sight and the balance of lighting – artificial and natural – makes it complete in setting up a ideal place for the residing geriatric community.

The precision with which the details are added shows the deep understanding of the needs of the users of such a building. A 45cm parapet allows a perfect outside view even while sitting. Windows are edged with timber, giving that extra bit of character enhancing the residential feel. The building is oriented in a perfect way as to ensure that the residents, either the living and sleeping areas, always face the greener areas which induce calmness.
