GM and LG come together for new electric vehicles

General Motors

There is a constant growth in technology everyday, and every effort is being laid to use different forms of energy other than the perishable ones. A lot of companies are experimenting with electric vehicles, as they hold a great prospect in the future. In the past we have witnessed many high profile giants coming together and developing new technology. Different forms of energy are being experimented with to get a strong alternative to petrol and diesel, which are expected to see and end in some years. Solar energy vehicles, electric vehicles are something we are looking forward to; but which one will lead the race still needs to be seen.

Last Thursday witnessed a big collaboration between two business giants, General Motors and LG Corp. They are getting together to develop electric cars, though its quite an unusual pairing, as both belong to different industries. LG group is well known for making electric appliances and General Motors is a name in itself in automobiles.

LG and GM engineers will specifically work on the vital components and the structures of these electric vehicles. This partnership is said to have developed when both these giants worked together for all-electric Chevy Volt and the Opel Ampera in Europe. GM motors also informed that the battery back for Chevrolet Volt was developed by LG during that time.

GM vice chairman Steve Girsky believes that the birth of this partnership will fulfill tomorrow’s transportation needs more quickly and their partnership strategy will give quick results. He said that while working with best suppliers, the consumer will be able to get the latest fuel-saving technology as soon as possible and that would save them money and time too.

Neither of the companies confirmed what all vehicles would be developed under this collaboration and when would the general public be able to use them. Even the equity is not being swapped between the two companies. Juno Cho, president and chief operating officer of LG Corp, said that they have made a strategic move and that they fully support GM Motors to lead the electric automobile industry.

GM on the other hand said that one of the main reasons behind this partnership had been the recent raised requirements of US Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) to 54.5 mpg by the end of the year 2025. Among all the collaborations, GM Motors and LG corp partnership is the second largest high profile collaboration announced this week. If we look at the past, then Ford and Toyota have also signed a deal to develop new hybrid technology for SUVs and light tucks.
