French sidewalk generates piezoelectricity to power streetlights

Eco Factor: Piezoelectric power technology to generate renewable energy for streetlights.

We’ve seen piezoelectric devices being embedded in everything ranging from dance floors to subway stations. Toulouse, France is now using the technology to generate enough electricity to run streetlights. The city has become the first to stick these pressure-sensitive modules on the sidewalks so that residents can generate power by simply walking down the street.

The technology being used comes from a Dutch company Sustainable Dance Club and features embedded micro-sensors that generate electricity whenever pressure is applied on them. Currently under trial, the system features a section of eight modules that generate about 60W of renewable power, enough to power a street lamp.
