Ford claims of high car recycling rates

cars being recycled

Recycled stuff is in vogue in the modern world. Recycled paper is fast gaining popularity. People are waking up to the necessity to recycle plastic and gas, energy and power. The latest to join the ‘Recycle Revolution’ is, believe it or not, cars!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than 95 percent of all end-of-life vehicles in the U.S. are processed for recycling, irrespective of their age, make or design. That’s an impressively higher percenatge than recycled paper and bottles! In case of cars, most of what’s recycled is ferrous scrap, which is used at the steel industry, saving iron ore and the cost of extracting it. 30 percent of the steel in food cans is recycled, and car bodies have 25 percent of recycled steel.

Ford USA claims 85% of every car sold by Ford is made of recycled stuff. Ford also announced that is working with Chrysler and GM through the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) and its Vehicle Recycling Partnership, all geared to make the figure touch 100%.

This stance would spell long-term benefits, especially for the environment. To begin with, it’d secure and expand U.S. manufacturing jobs and magnify the credibility of the country in the global market. By ensuring a reduce in landfilling and incineration, it is considerably easy on the environment. This new technology prevents generation of toxic greenhouse gases, saves energy and prevents pollution caused by the extraction and processing of virgin materials and the manufacture of products using virgin materials. It also saves on precious exhaustible natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.

Says Ford’s Dan Adsit, Manager, Recycling Planning,

Ford has been implementing recycled content on our vehicles for several years. In addition to using significant amounts of recycled metals, we include nonmetallic recycled content in vehicle parts such as battery trays, splash shields, engine fan shrouds and carpet.

Successfully implemented, this might carve out a greener world for the future generations. We will say Amen to that.
