Architects propose solar-powered blimp to encourage sustainability

fhp architects skyglow 1 Eco Factor: Solar-powered airships to create awareness on global warming.

According to recent statistics about 27 billion tons of carbon dioxide is being released into the atmosphere every year. This massive addition has altered the natural blend of air, which is heating the atmosphere resulting in hurricanes, rising sea levels, spreading deserts and the loss of arable land.

fhp architects skyglow 2Now a team of architects are proposing a unique way to create awareness on global warming by designing 200 meter long helium filled airships that are enveloped in a flexible OLED lighting membrane. Powered by solar energy these airships, dubbed SKYGLOW, will be flown into major population centers and will be docked at these locations.

In addition to these airships, several smaller replicas will be installed and fitted with touchscreen questionnaires. Forming an interactive night part at the base, these replicas will invite people to answer questions on carbon related issues in our homes, transport choices and recycling levels. The information gathered will be fed into the lighting systems of the small SKYGLOWS, which will then glow from red to blue according to awareness.

Targets will be advised to the public and they will again be invited to calculate their carbon footprint. This collective information will be fed into the main SKYGLOW, along with national grid energy consumption levels and air quality information. fhp architects skyglow 5

Skyglow was designed by Ross Orr, Gary Dewberry, Andy Kiely and Adam Lauri who took part in a back to work scheme called Greenshoots. Greenshoots gave unemployed professionals in the construction industry the opportunity to work on a Evolo Competition in a live work environment which was kindly provided by FHP Architects. Special thanks goes to Mark Kennedy from Greenshoots, Ian Fewer, Niall Harrington from FHP Architects for mentoring the Greenshoots Scheme and Joergen Geerds at New York Panorama for allowing the architects to use his New York photographs.
