Europe to get £300m onshore wind farm soon, capable of powering 200,000 homes!

scottish power 9Europe to get its largest onshore wind farm soon, as the construction on it has started. The £300m Whitelee Windfarm of the Scottish Power will raise 140 turbines above Eaglesham Moor within three years, which will harness enough wind energy capable of powering 200,000 homes, informed Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Alistair Darling.

Darling said,

Scotland has long been the UK’s powerhouse and is now establishing itself in the vanguard on renewables. Sixteen per cent of Scotland’s electricity already comes from these sources, compared to four per cent for the UK as a whole, and Whitelee will save a further 250,000 tonnes of harmful CO2 every year.

There is also a commitment for increasing the ‘Renewables Obligation’ level from its current limit of 15.4 per cent by 2015 up to a maximum of 20 per cent by 2020.
