Ethanol from farm waste

Farm waste can effectively be transformed into ethanol, an alternative fuel. Demand for such alternative sources of energy production is increasing day by day. Hence, to meet the soaring demand, along with the increasing oil prices, a Canadian company has developed a new and more efficient process to produce ethanol from farm waste.

Experts hope that the new technology could help not only to reduce demand on fossil fuels, but also increase in security of energy. Thanks to Ottawa-based Iogen Corporation for the innovation and providing the alternative solution to the prevailing problems.

A variety of enzymes and their break down process of different plant fibers are considered in this case. To produce ethanol, the leftovers from crops that are grown for food are used. For example, the process uses the straw left after wheat is harvested for producing the gas.

Lignin, a plant fiber is extracted from farm waste. And to power the ethanol production facility, this fiber can be burned like coal.
