Horizon Power’s Pippunyah Solar Diesel Power Station has officially been unveiled in the eastern Pilbara region of Western Australia. The plant, which is being claimed to be the world’s first hybrid solar power plant, incorporates 1350 SunPower Solar Panels that track the sun and produce 1160KW of renewable electric power.

It is expected that the plant will provide up to 89 percent of the town’s electricity needs during peak periods in summer. The hybrid power plant will also help save 1119 tons of GHG emissions each year and save between 35-40 percent diesel consumption. The power plant incorporates a single axis tracking system, which is combined with the latest diesel technology. Energy generated by the plant is stored in an innovative flywheel energy storage system.
