Italian company Enel on Monday inaugurated a hydrogen-driven power station that is claimed to be the world's first such facility to produce electricity in significant amounts. The plant located in Fusina near Venice will produce 16 megawatts of power, enough to power 20,000 homes. The $63 million power station is being seen as the first step towards the development of hydrogen as a non-polluting energy source.
Apart from producing clean energy, this green initiative will also help in reducing 17,000 tonnes of greenhouse carbon dioxide gas from polluting the environment annually. Since the electricity generated by hydrogen is five to six times more expensive than producing it by traditional methods, we can hope to see it flourishing only after a few decades.
