North Carolina’s newest solar farm, developed by Carolina Solar Energy, officially opened Wednesday and will generate about 650KW of green power, which is enough to power about 60 urban homes. The electricity generated by the plant will be purchased by Progress Energy as part of a 20-year contract.
The 5-acre facility houses 3,420 angled photovoltaic panels to generate the specified power. The installers state that solar panels are expensive and putting them on public display isn’t without risk. To further promote the green theme the facility will make use of sheep to trim the grass, which will replace conventional gas-powered machines from doing the same at the cost of emissions.
