Eco Factor: Japanese company develops solar-powered cellphone.

While Samsung took the lead in India by launching a low-cost solar-powered cellphone, it’s up to NTT DOCOMO to launch a solar hybrid phone that packs an 8MP camera as well. The Japanese cellphone manufacturer has announced that its solar hybrid phone can be charged using the conventional wall socket or solar energy if you’re stuck somewhere with an empty battery. The company claims that after harnessing sun's rays for 30 minutes, the handset will be able to offer 1 minute of talk time.

Apart from being great for all budding environmentalists, the phone is great for those who love to spend their day at the beach or in the pool, as the company claims that the waterproof phone can be immersed in water at a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. The clamshell phone will be exhibited at the DOCOMO booth at Wireless Japan 2009 in Tokyo.
