Eco Cars: Volkswagen's Up! Lite diesel-electric hybrid gets 70mpg

Eco Factor: Low-emission car powered by a hybrid engine.

Volkswagen has unveiled its new low-emission vehicle, the Up! Lite, which gets powered by a hybrid diesel-electric engine. The sporty four-seater is being touted to be a direct cousin to the company’s L1 two-seater car that was showcased at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The Up! Lite is equipped with a fuel-efficient TDI engine, an electric motor and a 7-speed direct shift gearbox, which combined with a tiny aerodynamic footprint allows the car to run 70 miles on a gallon of fuel, while emitting just 65g/km of CO2.

The lightweight car sports several components made from carbon fiber, which includes the roof, wheel spokes and portions of the frame.
