Audi has announced that the company will be expanding its solar capacity on the roof of its main plant in Ingolstadt in Germany, which will be used to charge the batteries of the Audi’s e-tron models. The plant already boasts about 11,600sqm of photovoltaic modules, which will be increased by 7500sqm by the end of the year.

The additional photovoltaic installation, which makes use of thin-layer modules, will provide a peak output rating of 500KW with approximately 460MWh of electricity obtainable from it. This is the first time that electricity generated on site using solar panels will be directly used in the company’s electricity network. The renewable energy generated will be used to power the cars’ batteries using new electric car-charging stations.
