His creation ditches the conventional design that assembles 65 individual components and features an umbrella with just 7 pieces. Fewer components means easy disassembly for recycling and repair.
Normally these little things that save us from getting drenched use either PFOS or PFBS for waterproofing, which are toxin by nature. So, the Tokyo-based designer uses water-resistant PET that eliminates the need for toxic waterproof canopy treatments. In addition, the single material use of PET allows for easy recycling without disassembly.
This smart umbrella sports a flat-packing design to reduce storage space and transportation costs. Automated vending machines placed along many railway stations and shopping center allow people to use an umbrella on rent. The consumers can use the umbrella till they need it, after which they can easily return it to vending machines. This shared use will help in diverting them from landfills.
