Energy Monitor: Tendril Residential Energy Ecosystem

There is a certain reason why I never get too excited about any new energy monitoring system and I most often just feel that they can just come and go. While this in no way is to say that they are not useful but they barely make much of a difference in most cases. It is the intent of saving energy that makes the difference and while the fancy systems do point out to ways where you can stop wasting energy, in most homes that is very limited. As I said earlier it boils down to the will of the people and how seriously they are committed to it rather than some system.

Tendril Networks, a smart grid start-up, has announced all the goods on its networked in-home energy display, called Tendril Residential Energy Ecosystem (TREE). There are a lot of versions of in-home energy displays out already, but the technology is pretty new so each new version is pretty unique, at least in layout. Tendril’s in-home display takes the basic system that shows energy use at a given moment and builds upon it, providing information on how much money a home is spending on electricity at a given moment.

Saving money on energy is going to get pretty darn easy with systems like that – and it won’t cost too much to access. Tendril expects that by mid-2009, consumers with advanced meters can buy the hardware for somewhere between $30 and $50. While the one good thing about this system is that it speaks in dollars and not in consumption making sure that it is pretty easy to understand and it also gets across making more impact. Hopefully it will encourage more people to take up energy saving more seriously… Hopefully.
