Some people dare to dream and some dare to make dreams come true. At least they are trying to give it a shape………..like the Danish architect firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen. This year Jan, they have won a design competition for Ecobay. It is a green plan for a town located near Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia. Located on a peninsula, the town looks out over the Baltic Sea. Sustainability is the driving force behind Ecobay for the team of architects, urban planners and consulting engineers working on this ambitious master plan. Estimated to house about to 6,000citizens over the next 15-20 years, the firm intends to turn the new town into a vibrant community complete with housing, schools, local shops, businesses and daycare centers. But all this in an uber eco-friednly manner. True to its name, Ecobay aims to be 100% sustainable by incorporating measures like wind farms, geo-thermal heating and hydro electricity. Multiple mix of many different functions within the community dramatically will minimize the need for transportation and most key destinations will be just a walk or bike ride away. Another factor which will ensure low energy consumption is the careful spacing of buildings, maximizing solar gain and at the same time minimizing heat loss due to overshadowing. Though the masterplan seems organic and almost romantic in shape, it is actually quite rational in the way it deals with the harsh winds blowing in from the Baltic Sea. Instead of a rigid urbangrid, a system of “dunes” spreads across the entire site.
