EcoFactor: A rickshaw that can be powered by both pedal power and solar energy designed to encourage green transport.

A ride on a rickshaw today brings back some really fond memories. There was a time, not more than a decade ago, when they were still a means of transportation in my own city. Since then, they seem to have been just phased out slowly but surely. It is really nice to know that beyond the big cities in India, there are still many who depend on these pollution-free vehicles for their daily source of revenue. But life can be really hard for these guys, and to earn their daily bread in the hot Indian summer by pedaling a vehicle uphill can be really nasty. Here is exactly where the new “Soleckshaw” shines in with magic.

The new solar-powered rickshaw has been introduced on a test basis in Chandni Chowk, Delhi and it seems that the drivers of these new vehicles are really enjoying the altered rickshaw. With mobile phone charging points for the riders and FM radio for entertainment, the new rickshaws with a solar rooftop are real boon in hot Indian weather. They can be both pedal-powered and solar powered with a 36-volt solar battery to store energy. Everyone seems to really enjoy the new ride, and the Soleckshaw is truly a welcome change.

The Dark Side:

The Soleckshaw will be fully introduced by the year 2010 and one sees no problem with the new solar powered pedal vehicles at all. All one can say is – the sooner, the better.
