Eco Factor: Zero-emission aircraft powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells.

A team of German engineers has unveiled the world’s first piloted aircraft that runs only from the power generated by its hydrogen fuel cell bank. The aircraft, dubbed the Antares DLR-H2, is a motor glider with a range of about 750km and an operating time of about five hours.

The aircraft has been developed by the DLR, Lange Aviation, BASF Fuel Cells and Denmark’s Serenergy. The system uses hydrogen as the only fuel source, which is converted into electrical energy by an electrochemical reaction with oxygen in the ambient air. Since the process doesn’t require any combustion, the only emission is clean water.

The researchers behind the project have stated that hydrogen power is still years away from becoming the primary source of fuel, but considering the environmental benefits it offers, hydrogen should be regarded as the green fuel of the future.
