Eco Factor: Photovoltaic and solar thermal plants to be set up in Fort Irwin by US Army.

US Army’s solar plans trace back to October last year, when they announced the development of a solar plant capable of generating 500MWs of solar electricity. The details on the plants have now been made public. The twist is that the Army won’t be developing a single solar power plant but a series of photovoltaic and solar thermal plants that will be spread out on 14,000 acres of land.

The projects will be developed by Clark Energy Group and Acciona Solar Power and will cost about $2 billion. Construction on the projects is expected to commence in 2011 and be completed by 2022. The energy generated by the projects will be used by the base and sold to the private sector as well.
