Eco Factor: Rain-making device being planned by whiz kid at the University of Nairobi.

There aren’t many research scientists in the world who are actually successful in developing systems that play with nature. A 23-year-old whiz kid at the University of Nairobi is attempting to do what others think is just an experiment that will never be successful.

The young inventor, Pascal Katana, is hoping to kill two birds with a single stone by developing a rain-bringing machine that is made from electronic waste. If successful, the student will become the first in the world with an artificial rainmaking gadget.

Katana states that he isn’t bending the laws of nature or reinventing something, but is just trying to mimic the natural systems that account for rainfall to develop a gadget that could do the same.

Biochemistry lets us know that rain clouds produce negatively charged electrons, which are attracted by positively charged electrons released by trees. The gadget Katana intends to develop will produce electrons similar to those of the trees.

While Katana is confident that his machine, made from recycled TVs, DVDs, radios, dead computers and other electronic systems, will do what it is intended for, there is no dearth of critics who think that rain is much more than a combination of electrons, and Katana will have to think more about the basics of geochemistry before he can be anywhere near success.
