Eco Factor: Invention could help prepare more energy efficient lighting systems.

The world’s smallest light bulb developed by a team of researchers lead by Chris Regan, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA, is said to be 100,000 times narrower and 10,000 times shorter than those made by Edison. Created at UCLA, the lamp’s filament is made up of a single carbon nanotube and is just 100 atoms wide.

It will appear like a point of light when lit, but otherwise it’s impossible to see it with the naked eye. This tiny invention has much to offer in contrast to its size. Researchers say that it can help them to understand how the physics of large things and the physics of the invisible things are related. In concern to the energy crisis, it’s a valuable find as it can guide energy efficient LEDs in more effective path.
