Eco Factor: Artificial trees that can harness the power of sun, wind and rain.

We at EcoFriend have always advised our readers to grow trees and plants in their backyards, not only for cleaner and fresher air but also to go green. Such treehuggers will now have another reason to love trees, as trees will now be providing them with green and clean electricity. The technology, courtesy Solar Botanic, makes use of artificial plants and trees that can harness the power of the sun, wind and rain. Solar Botanic states that the key to this master technology is the use of something they call “The Nanoleaf.”

This Nanoleaf consists not only of solar and thermal cells to harness the sun, but also comes with branches that generate electricity when they are moved by the wind. Solar Botanic also claims that a 6 sq meter tree made with their technology would be able to provide enough electricity to power an entire household. The company, however, is not stopping there but is busy envisioning trees that will power motorways, streets and parks.

The Dark Side:

The unique technology holds an ecofriendly promise, but we feel that it still will take a long time for Solar Botanic to mass produce such trees, and in the meantime it’s better if we just stick to solar panels and wind turbines.
