Eco Factor: Software to help reduce energy consumption.

With the world getting more and more addicted to computers, computer education has become an utmost important science that every child in this world should be blessed with. However, computerization comes at the high cost of energy, and of course software as well. Userful and ThinNetworks have now been selected by the Brazilian government to answer both these problems. The companies have come up with a unique system that allows multiple monitors to share the same PC and hence share power and software.

The companies will supply 356,800 virtualized desktops to schools in all of Brazil’s 5560 municipalities. This system will save about 60% in up-front costs and about 80% in annual power expenditures. It will also save more than 170,000 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere annually, which can be compared to taking 28,000 cars off the roads. The system will cost less than $50 per seat, which is not much considering the added benefits that come with it.

The Dark Side:

Sharing hardware with multiple monitors will definitely slow down processing and it will become almost impossible to run any complicated task on any of the systems.
