Eco Factor: Hydrogen fuel cell achieves 63% efficiency.

NKG Insulators Ltd has announced the availability of a new solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) that has an efficiency of 63%. The SOFC uses hydrogen gas as fuel and features a power output of over 700W and an operating temperature of 800°C. The company claims that coating the cell’s anode with a thin film of zirconia, which functions as an electrolyte, and securing the output with cathodes on both sides helped them achieve this level of efficiency.

The 1.5mm thick cell can be stacked together to increase the output. The company has already developed a prototype stack in which tens of cells are stacked together for the required output. This cell has been provided to a leading oil company in Japan, which will evaluate the performance of the cell. The company is now looking forward to get involved in alliances that allow them to advance the development for much better systems.
