Eco Factor: New LED module to make signage highly energy-efficient.

We at EcoFriend have seen many energy efficient ways of advertising right from the solar powered billboard to the living billboard by McDonald’s. Here is another way to advertise your stuff without swelling your carbon footprint. This technology comes via Nittoh Kogaku KK – a company from the land of the rising sun. The company has developed a new LED light source module for use in low-power advertising signage. The technology was showcased at Kogen 2008.

The technology makes use of optical lenses that realize the light emitted by a single low power LED onto a large surface. A usual 1,200 X 600 mm signboard requires about 100 LEDs and 35 – 80 W of power for a brightness of 2,000lx. However, with this new technique, the same amount of brightness can be achieved with just 10 LEDs and a power consumption of just 25 watts.

The company stated that though similar techniques are already in use for LCD backlights, no one ever realized that the same technology can be used to make signage boards energy-efficient. The 15mm thick light has a color temperature of 6,500K and a life of about 50,000 hours. The company plans to roll the technology out in the first half of 2009.

The Dark Side:

LEDs are something we love and any improvement in the technology is very much appreciated at EcoFriend. Apart from the undisclosed price, we don’t have anything negative to say about the light modules.
