EcoFactor: Ecofriendly Ionic Jelly for batteries with low environmental impact.

Dead batteries make up a large fraction of non-disposable waste that we are continuously emitting in order to keep our lives going. They not only pollute the environment, but with the passage of time, the chemicals residing in these batteries seep down into the ground and pollute the already scarce water reserves. Scientists led by Susana Berreiros from the New University of Lisbon seem to get an answer to this problem with a newly discovered Ionic Jelly material, which they say can make batteries and other electrochemical devices cheaper and more ecofriendly.

The material is created by dissolving gelatine in an ionic liquid, which is a solution made up of negatively and positively charged particles. This non-volatile and non-flammable liquid conducts electricity and is generally very stable. But since we use batteries in dry form, this liquid needed to get into solid state.
A chance discovery here made the ionic liquid change its state to solid as scientists’ added gelatine along with some other polymers into this liquid. As the liquid changed its state, these scientists knew that they have discovered something with some very interesting properties. This material was able to conduct electricity, although only around half as well as the parent ionic liquid. Still, this material had all the properties that could make it a good eco choice for use in dry batteries and some other electrochemical devices as well.

The Dark Side:

Currently the research looks promising and we don’t think that we can see any dark factor here. But as more information comes in we can definitely analyze this research more critically.
