Eco Tech: Innowattech’s piezoelectric devices tested in Israel

Eco Factor: Piezoelectric devices embedded on highways to generate electricity from moving cars.

Ten months after a concept was developed at Innowattech, which could solve the global energy crisis, the first practical test of energy generating roadways is being conducted in Israel. The tests were conducted by installing piezoelectric generators underneath a ten-meter strip of asphalt, which could generate about 2000Wh of electricity.

If the tests are successful, the project is expected to be expanded and generators will be situated in one-kilometer long strips along Israel’s highways. The generators are installed five centimeters beneath the upper layer of asphalt and a 1km stretch of a single lane road would be able to generate about 200KWh, while a four-lane highway would produce about 1MWh of electricity, which is enough to power 2500 households.
