Eco Factor: Sustainable polar station opens in Antarctica.

Scientists have shown that solar and wind energy don’t just work well in the tropical landscapes by developing the first carbon-neutral polar station in the deserted land of Antarctica. The station’s successful launch has showcased the possibility of solar and wind energy in the icy temperatures of the poles.

Scientists involved with the project have confirmed that the systems are working just as well as they do in other parts of the world. Constructed over two years, the project doesn’t only boast of renewable energy generators, but a water recycling system as well. Scientists living in here will reuse shower water and toilet water up to five times before being discarded down a crevasse. The water recycling system will make use of micro-organisms and decomposition for this feat.

The Dark Side:

Wind energy system installed in places like Antarctica could work perfectly all through the year. However, the solar panels won’t by any means generate electricity during the winter darkness.
