Eco Factor: Waterproof wind turbines designed specifically for offshore use.

French company Areva is all set to debut the technology it has been working on over the past decade. The company has developed the world’s toughest wind turbines designed specifically for offshore use. The waterproof turbines have been designed with a simple yet robust design by making the wind turbine light in weight. The ingenious design of the wind turbine will assure better performance in low wind conditions and also ensure fewer maintenance visits.

The 90m-tall wind turbines will have a spinning diameter of 120m and are developed with blades reinforced with carbon fiber, which at full power will generate 5MW of electrical power, enough to power 5000 homes. Areva has plans to install six of these mega wind turbines off the cost of Germany, which under ideal conditions would be able to power 30,000 urban homes.

The Dark Side:

The mega wind turbines will definitely be able to curb some issues related to the maintenance of wind turbines, especially installed offshore. However, transporting these huge machines 30 miles offshore would not be as easy and as ecofriendly as it seems.
