Eco Tech: Forget expensive PVs, capture waste heat for 45GWs of green energy

Eco Factor: US Department of Energy offering funding for CHP systems.

The world is currently going through a phase where lots of energy is needed with minimum impact on the environment. But does that actually mean that we need to spend billions of dollars on solar and wind energy generating plants? Recent analysis by the US Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled some shocking facts about energy. The DOE believes that about 50% of all fuel burned in the US goes unused and is wasted into our atmosphere as wasted heat, which if harnessed could exceed the output of all solar, wind and geothermal facilities combined together.

DOE believes that potentially this waste heat can be used to generate about seven quadrillion BTUs of free energy, which comes to about 46GWs of green energy. After going through the statistics and the enormous potential of waste heat recovery, DOE is offering $40 million for R&D and demonstration of CHP (Combined Heat and Power) systems.

The desired plan is something that somehow manages to capture all the heat that is usually wasted by facilities that use fossil fuel to heat boilers, melt metals, run engines and cook food that ends up on the grocery store shelves. The plan doesn’t seem easy, but considering the enormous potential, we’re waiting for the one who does it first and in the best possible way.
