Eco Factor: Desalination plant provides fresh water for Sharem al Shiekh city.
Being in Egypt is great from a vacation point of view, provided you carry an ample amount of fresh water that can quench your thirst in Egypt’s dry climate. With not many sources of fresh water available, American desalination company, Energy Recovery Inc has installed a unique desalination plant in Sharem al Shiekh city that can supply potable water to the resorts and residents of the town.
The plant is based on the reverse osmosis process, where fresh water is forced through a membrane emitting fresh water and steam at the other end. The fresh water goes to the tap and the steam is captured to power the machines that force saline water though the membrane. This re-use operation cuts the power required for the system to work in half. Being highly efficient and effective, the plant’s output is used to provide water for the people living in the city and an 18-hole golf course as well.
