Eco Tech: Cudrefin02 installs public energy awareness display

Eco Factor: Energy information display based on Plogg wireless smart meter technology.

A Swiss research group at the Bits-to-Energy Lab of ETH Zurich has developed a browser-based system that delivers real-time energy statistics of all electric devices that are connected to it. Known as “Energie Visible,” the system is based on Plogg Wireless Smart Meter technology. This new system has been installed at Cudrefin02’s headquarters, where it graphically displays the energy consumption of all the systems running on a large screen at the front of the building.

Besides creating public awareness, the system makes it easy for staff members to track their individual energy statistics. Each appliance that is to be monitored is connected to the Plogg Blu Smart Meter that uses Bluetooth to provide energy consumption statistics. The information is then transferred to large displays mounted at the front of the building to enable passers-by to get real-time information on energy consumption inside the office.

The Dark Side:

To conserve energy, systems and monitors need to be reduced or replaced with energy-efficient systems. Having a large display outside office premises just to show the energy consumption to passers-by is simply wastage of a precious resource.
