Eco Factor: Engineers modify PHEVs to carry large batteries.

The electric vehicles of today require an overnight charge back at your home. Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization think that the future of PHEVs might be different, where they won’t actually be a burden on the electricity grid, but will serve as a powerhouse by storing electricity during off-peak hours and using the same to power your house during peak hours.

These researchers have modified PHEVs to carry a 30Ah NiMH battery, which is capable of holding a 6KWh charge, to allow cars to plug into and charge with electricity from the grid or from on-site renewable energy sources. The aim is to transform PHEVs into mobile battery banks that can be integrated and used in the home.

The PHEVs will be equipped with systems that will monitor the travel patterns of different users and also allow the residual power left in the batteries at the end of the day to be available for other uses. When the car isn’t being used, its batteries can be used to store power or run appliances by storing off-peak or surplus electricity generated by on-site renewable generators.
