Eco Factor: Energy-efficient catenary-free power technology for trams and lightweight rail vehicles.
Bombardier Transportation has introduced the first completely contactless and catenary-free operating tram, the Bombardier PRIMOVE. The PRIMOVE is a unique technology that not only makes trams more energy efficient, but also reduces visual pollution created by overhead transmission lines. The technology can be incorporated in a wide range of vehicles from trams to light-rail vehicles. It also allows trams to operate catenary-free over varying distances, everywhere, including underground lines. Moreover, the PRIMOVE technology works on induction, hence making sure that there is no wear and tear of components, which reduces maintenance costs.
The technology is based on contactless inductive power transfer, which is coupled with the company’s MITRAC Energy Saving system, which stores energy gained during operation and braking. This system uses this energy to optimize power supply, thereby saving energy. It also ensures maximum vehicle performance and continuous operation of the vehicle just like conventional catenary systems.
The Dark Side:
Catenary-free technology has often been criticized because it increases the overall weight of the tram, hence making them inefficient. If Bombardier’s MITRAC energy saver doesn’t work as promised, the technology could soon lose its ecofriendly grace.
