Eco Tech: Australian scientists to breed sheep that burp less to tackle climate change

Eco Factor: Attempt to reduce the amount of methane in the atmosphere by breeding sheep that burp less.

Scientists estimate that about 90% of the total amount of methane that animals like sheep, cows and goats produce, is released by burping. Australian scientists believe that they can breed sheep that burp less and hence release lesser amount of methane, which is a greenhouse gas.

Scientists are carrying out experiments to find biological reason to support the fact that some sheep are less windy than others. Experts opine that livestock are responsible for more than 50% of the total greenhouse emissions produced by agriculture in Australia, and breeding ecofriendly animals could reduce emissions.
