Eco Factor: Artificial reef structure to replenish the marine environment.

Confronting with regular red tides, environmentalists in UAE are trying to replenish the marine environment using artificial reefs that will be placed off the coast of Fujairah. The system is based on the use of 10 reef balls, three reef structures and one recycled plastic structure that were placed about half-a-kilometer offshore at a depth of 15m.

The reef balls are made using concrete and eco-wood that is made from recycled plastic. The reef structures are intended to help begin a new underwater ecosystem, which as of today has been converted into a “desert.” Environmentalists involved with the project said that fish have already started checking out the structures and they’re expecting the initial growths by the end of this year.
