Eco Tech: US Army considers solar-powered winged vehicles for future air attacks

Eco Factor:
Solar-powered aerial combat vehicles that effectively and accurately destroy enemy target.

While this may not sound very eco-friendly, there is very little in the US army that is green apart from their uniform. The armed forces are planning to use solar powered unmanned aerial vehicles to coordinate and execute future attacks with surgical precision. This new technology is being called swarming micro air vehicles (SMAV) and is a project that is being monitored by the US Army Research Lab’s Micro Autonomous Science and Technology (MAST) center.

The solar birds of the future will coordinate and attack by communicating among themselves and are capable of autonomously detecting and destroying any enemy target. They are composed of many flying structures which work as a single unit and are capable of penetrating and destroying any target without causing damage to the environment around them. Their use of solar energy and their accuracy in attacks both saves energy and stop the army from bombing non-hostile targets.

The Dark Side:

It is almost understood that being a technology developed for combat, the technology will still use loads of energy and SMAV will create havoc when let loose on enemy camp. Wars are often ugly and using solar energy for SMAV is more of a strategic move than an eco-friendly enterprise.
