Eco Marathon: Shell Lures Engineers With $10,000 For Beating 7,148 MPG

shell super mileage marathon

The ‘Eco Marathon’ sponsored by Shell catches the attention of the teams capable of producing the most fuel efficient car possible. The single-seat racer, Microjoule, by a team from the French Technical School, St. Joseph, La Joliverie won honors in the Prototype Category of Shell Oil’s 2006 and 2007 Eco-Marathon last year while traveling on an incredible 7,148 miles on a single gallon of fuel (in other terms, roughly ten miles for each teaspoon). It will return to the serpentine Nogaro Motor Circuit in Gers, France, from May 22nd through the 24th, to defend its title, competing against some 200 teams from 25 countries.

Shell acknowledges the purpose of the competition being designing and building vehicles that use the least fuel with the fewest emissions possible; and could be run on conventional fuels such as diesel, petrol and LPG, or the alternative fuels such as solar, electric, hydrogen and biomass. The teams would certainly go on to concentrate upon reducing the size of the car, engine, and wheels; making the vehicles more slippery can also do the trick. The winning team will receive $10,000 as prize money for beating the 7,148 MPG mark. Hope the engineers come up with some enormous designs and inspirations.
