Eco Factor: Solar and wind powered house constructed from salvaged materials.

After David and Sandra Dubin, residents of Hamptons, nearly lost their home to fire in 2008, Hamptons Green Alliance saw an opportunity to rebuild the house, giving it a carbon neutral status with the addition of solar and wind energy harvesting systems. As the owners wished that the house should be recreated in its original form, HGA salvaged usable material from the debris for the new home.

The new house gets an 800-square-foot addition to accommodate a new living room, a second-story master suite and a bedroom over the garage. But the addition didn’t make any change in the home’s exterior design. Currently under construction, the house will be insulated with foam insulation and will make use of a heat-recovery ventilation system.

Power to the new dwelling will be harvested from a 7KW rooftop solar array and two wind turbines, which collectively churn out about 5KW of green power, which are coupled with an evacuated solar thermal system to provide hot water for the inhabitants. With all those green system installed, the house aims for a LEED platinum certification.
