Eco Factor: Energy-saving plug encourages users to save energy.

One of the best ways to encourage the masses to save energy is to inform them about their energy consumption in real time and allow them to compare their consumption with others using the same system. Zerofootprint has created a new “TalkingPlug” that helps users monitor their energy usage in real time.

With an initial price tag of $50, the TalkingPlug fits onto the top of existing electrical sockets and is equipped with an RFID chip, microprocessor and wireless networking that can transfer energy data to a central server from where users can compare their energy usage with others using the same system.

The company believes that if mass produced, the cost of the device can be brought down considerably, making it an effective device to help people reduce their energy consumption.
